- Halloween Happenings: Report by Dawn Bird
- Volunteers/ donations: This is live off of the website. Positions are slowly filling up. Food: Bachman’s pretzels, carrots, and possibly apples (maybe donated by McDonald’s??) Waiting to hear from Lego for prizes. Student Council presented a list of suggested prizes, including a “dunking of the principals”!! Reminder flyers are going out next week. We can also e-blast these flyers.
- A new storage spot will be used for next year.
- Needs? Volunteers for Thursday and Saturday.
- Book Fairs
- Updates/ volunteer needs? Discussed whether or not to continue to donate proceeds to classroom libraries. Also, students who are in need will be given certificates to get books. Unanimously agreed to continue this.
- Current Calendar/ planned & suggested. Halloween Happenings and Book Fairs are set. Baskets will be raffled during Parent/teacher conferences. The PTO budget will provide advance funding of $100 to help fill the basket. Discussion of whether or not to include MBA in basket raffle. It was decided to go forward, with maybe 3 baskets at MBA and 7 at SES.
- Cultural Enrichment update by Angela Hewitt.
- Updates: Anti-bullying Program was a big hit!
- Angela Hewitt reported that she met with MBA principal. He would like additional cultural enrichment programs and said he would commit to more fundraising events if necessary. A split of fund-raising monies currently is the process from the PTO, based on the percentages of actual fundraising dollars from each school.
- “I Am Special, You Are Special” is set for January.
- “Ugly Duckling” is set for March.
- The Hartford Symphony performance has been cancelled due to the huge increase in cost.
- Angela discussed having Brian Chevalier coming back to do smaller groups and discussing how to write songs.
- Fundraising
- Review Calendar
- Fall – Butterbraids profit of $3,782 (100 students participated) & Opt Out (100 students at SES, 32 at MBA) 74% of profit came from SES. Discussion of increased PR at MBA. Maybe incentives for MBA homerooms? Maybe come up with a fund-raiser that might interest middle school students? Perhaps have two separate fund-raising committees—SES/MBA. Top seller gift cards will be handed out at the SES assembly in October.
- Winter – Coupon Books & Gift Cards: Angie reported that the coupon books will be going out in November. We get 50% of profits. It is a new book for this year. $25 each. The company did all of the printing and flyers. Gift cards will be going out hopefully before Black Friday. This can be done all year, also, but we would need a chairperson to handle the details.
- Megan Emrick is trying to think of an appropriate raffle fund-raiser for MBA. It needs to be coordinated with their student government. They are in the process of electing officials now.
- Spring – Fun Run/ Walk for kids. A date needs to be set and coordinated with P.E. teachers at SES and MBA.
- Other? Suggestion was made to have a “Movie Night” w/ free babysitting while parents go shopping. Question of background checks… Perhaps high schoolers or girl scouts/boy scouts? No volunteers expressed a desire to chair this…
- Walk to School Day is in October (the 7th). Maybe next year??
- General Business
- PTA to PTO Transfer
- Waiting on 501(c)(3) status appv’l/ all forms filed: waiting for approval
- General Discussion
- Next Meeting: 11/12 at 7:00 in the MBA media center.
- Questions/ Suggestions: *Perhaps have a survey of parents to see what they might like to see as presentations at MBA. A volunteer for this is needed. *Mrs. Oliver explained the behavioral expectations and the consequences for fifth graders. It was suggested that if they are spoken to as a group in the future, that the parents be sent home a notice as well to keep parents in the loop.
- Motion to Adjourn at 8:05 by Emily, 2nd. by all.
